Our History

On 13th November 1953, Mr Paddy Dwyer and his wife Carmel opened the doors of their first shop in 6 Shop Street, Drogheda, in what was previously a leather and accessory store.

Since the store first opened its doors, Dwyers has always prided itself on a reputation for excellence, that nothing is too much trouble to our customer, and sourcing the finest quality merchandise. Paddy Dwyers shoes is a family run business, which is probably one of the principal reasons why the traditions laid down at its foundations, over 60 years ago, and are still vigourously maintained and as each year goes on Paddy Dwyers continues to grow, adapt, reassess and reinvent itself to create a new history.

In 1974 Victor Dwyer joined the family business, having trained and gained invaluable experience in Edinburgh, Scotland. Victor, since then has grown his ladies and childrens shoe business to one of the finest in leinster, to which ladies from all over the province and further afield regularly visit for their footwear needs.

In 1978 Paddy Dwyer Jnr joined the family business, having studied Commerce in UCD. Paddy continued to work in 6 Shop Street until 1985, while he developed the mens and sports business.

In 1979, Mr Nicholas Ludlow, joined Paddy Dwyers as Manager, and he helped to grow the business, and continues to do so to this day.

In 1985, Victor and Paddy split the business, with Victor remaining in 6 Shop Street, where he continued on Ladies & Childrens shoes. Paddy moved to 37/38 Shop Street, across the road from 6 Shop Street, combining a stylish shopfit with high end sports brands and all his shoe brands. This store proved to be a huge success with the younger set, who enjoyed shopping for all their latest sports brands.

In 1998, Marathon Sports, Irelands leading sports retailer moved into 37/38 Shop Street and continued on the business Dwyers had built up in the sports industry, meanwhile, Paddy opened a mens shoe store in 11 Shop Street, from where we continue to trade. Indeed, it is now Irelands only exclusively gents footwear store. The store remains a huge success for all ages, who enjoy shopping for top end brands aswell as quality in the economy footwear also.

In 2011, Sarah Jane Dwyer, Paddys daughter joined the business, and has added a modern, contemporary range of young fashion within the store.
